She had moved into a client-facing role in the secondaries market, working directly with ultra-high-net-worth clients. Her previous role had been far less visible.
That changes what a wardrobe has to do. She needed to blend in seamlessly with her clientele, in rooms where people notice these things and read them quickly.
She also wanted the mornings back. Standing in front of a full wardrobe and concluding there was nothing to wear had become routine, and she was tired of the deliberation it took to get dressed.
What she wanted was straightforward: clothes that looked good, and that she felt good in.
Her wardrobe wasn't sparse. It was full of going-out tops and dresses for occasions, weddings, galas, dinners. What it didn't have were the basics and office essentials that let the rest of it work.
Without those, nothing mixed. Every outfit had to be assembled from statement pieces, so the only available registers were "underdressed" or "on the way to a party". There was no version of her that read expensive and easy on a normal Tuesday.
We built the foundation first: the basics and office pieces that everything else could be layered onto. Once those existed, the clothes she already owned suddenly had somewhere to go.
We shopped together, and I broke down her silhouette for her while we did, so she could see why certain shapes worked on her and others didn't.
I also put her in shapes and styles she would never have chosen for herself. Most people shop inside a narrow band of what they already believe suits them, and that band is usually set years earlier by something that had nothing to do with their body or their life now.
We shopped high and low deliberately. Some pieces are worth investing in and some are not, and I wanted her to leave knowing the difference rather than assuming that dressing well requires spending a lot.
She gets complimented consistently on the pieces we chose together, which is pleasant but not the point. The point is that she feels put together and considerably more confident walking into rooms that used to require thinking about.
She can also shop on her own now. She knows her silhouette, she knows which shapes work, and she knows where it's worth spending. That was always the goal: not a wardrobe she depends on me to maintain, but the judgement to keep building it herself.
