Five Signs Your Image Hasn't Caught Up to Your Career

August 10, 2026 ยท 5 min read

Careers move faster than wardrobes and websites do. It's normal for your image to lag a step or two behind where you actually are. The problem is when the gap gets wide enough that people misread you. Here's what that usually looks like.

1. Your LinkedIn photo is from a different job

Not just a different year, but a different role, a different level of seniority, sometimes a different industry. If you wouldn't wear that outfit into the room you're in now, it shouldn't be the first thing people see.

2. You get introduced more impressively than you introduce yourself

If a colleague's introduction of you lands harder than your own bio or elevator pitch, that's a positioning problem, not a modesty problem. Other people can see your value clearly; your own materials should say it just as plainly.

3. Your wardrobe still dresses for your last promotion

Clothes are one of the few tools that can telegraph seniority and intent before you've said a word. If you were recently promoted, took on more client-facing work, or started being the person in the room instead of just in the room, your closet is worth revisiting.

4. Strangers guess the wrong thing about what you do

This is the clearest signal there is. If people consistently guess a different role, industry, or level than the one you actually hold, your presentation and your reality have quietly diverged.

5. You've stopped updating anything

No new photos, no bio revisions, no wardrobe additions in a year or more, often because it feels indulgent to spend time on, or because it's unclear where to even start. That inertia is usually the real reason the gap exists in the first place.

None of these mean something is wrong with you. They mean your image is overdue for a look, the same way a strategy, a website, or a pitch deck eventually is.

Recognize two or three of these? That's usually where we'd start.
